Sandal Vandal

We’ve been in 69 different campgrounds since beginning this vanlife; unless it is raining, we leave our shoes outside every night. Last night was no different in that regard: two pairs of hiking shoes, two pairs of water shoes, and this pair of sandals. The other shoes were untouched, yet these sandals were shredded! Why? To what end? Was this critter vandal collecting nesting material, or was it attracted to whatever salts or other human scents/oils may have been on the straps? I will never know!

We’ve been sleeping with the screen door down, leaving Vanda’s side door open as the night temperatures have been so pleasant. Last night however — the night of critter vandalism — was chilly so the side door was closed, allowing for the shenanigans to occur without us hearing a thing. Had the door been open with just the screen separating us from the wild, would the critter have approached? Would we have heard “chewing” sounds? The real question is: will we start putting our shoes away at night to prevent this type of occurrence? Stay tuned… xo
